People are Noticing!
Happy New Year to all! My last post in 2017 documented the first 100 days on my wellness endeavor. As a recap:
- During those 100 days, I was using a ketogenic nutritional approach with whole foods and intermittent fasting. Even though there were a few days off program, overall it was a success and I have felt great.
- I lost 37.8 pounds, normalized my blood pressure, and definitely improved my health and well-being. (A great way to end the year!!)
Since that last post, I’ve continued with this approach about 85% of the time.
Over the holidays was a challenge with so many of the sweet and starchy foods that I love (= am addicted to??). There were 3 or 4 days when I went above the 50 grams of carbohydrates — sometimes way over 50 grams. But, the rest of the time I focused on eating mainly healthy fats from whole foods and using some intermittent fasting.
Unlike before, I haven’t been weighing myself daily. So I was happy this morning when I got on the scale and it showed 268.5 pounds. Even though it’s not a loss — actually it’s a 0.3 lb gain since December 14th — I was happy to see that my weight was basically the same. Especially since it’s been about a month. (Hooray for holding steady!!)
Now back to the point of this post…
People are Noticing!
Last week at work, three (yes…three!!) different women came up to me independently to tell me that I was looking good. And strangely enough, it was all different times on the same day.
I couldn’t believe it! I must admit that I was a bit embarrassed — I don’t like being the center of attention and I especially don’t like talking about weight. (And this was the first acknowledgement of my weight loss in quite a while!)
But, I thanked them and made an active effort to be open about my weight struggles, my health and what I was doing.
Lots of comments and questions ensued:
You are melting! I had to tell you that you are looking great! What are you doing? I didn’t want to say anything, but I just had to ask.
So, I talked about what I had been doing with a ketogenic nutritional approach and intermittent fasting. I was surprised that some people had heard about both. In fact, one friend — who is in fantastic shape and a Crossfit regular! — was using the ketogenic nutritional approach for improved cognitive function! What a great surprise, since now we could talk about experience and strategy.
I haven’t been as strict with my 8 guidelines over these last few weeks. But, following a ketogenic approach with some intermittent fasting for most of the time has at least helped me to maintain my weight. For me, maintaining my weight over a month — especially a holiday month — is a big deal. In the past, I would have definitely gained weight and lost control. So I consider this a success.
Obviously I still have weight to lose and health to gain. I hope to go back to my 8 guidelines more strictly soon. But today, at this moment, I’m happy that my weight has stayed the same. And having such positive feedback from my work colleagues is really encouraging. I want to continue losing weight, getting healthy and learning about health and nutrition.
I choose to be good and not worry about being perfect.
But for today — this moment — I won’t let myself worry about the past or the future. For today, I chose to live in the moment. I choose to be proud at what I’ve done for myself and my health. I choose to be good and not worry about being perfect.
